What should you know about pico laser for melasma?

Melasma causes brown or grey-brown patches, commonly on the cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip. It can be influenced by sunlight, visible light, heat, hormones, and skin irritation. A clinician distinguishes it from sun spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation before choosing a procedure.

Pico laser uses very brief pulses to target pigment. It may help selected patients, yet energy-based treatment can also trigger inflammation and make melasma look darker or more uneven. The goal is controlled improvement, not a guarantee that pigment will stay away.

Discuss a plan that may include topical therapy and strict light protection before laser. Tell the clinician about pregnancy, hormonal medicines, recent tanning, active dermatitis, and any history of dark marks after injury or treatment.
