The number refers to the laser wavelength, while pico describes the extremely brief pulse duration. A 450 wavelength is generally selected for pigment nearer the skin surface, though suitability depends on the spot, its depth, your skin tone, and the diagnosis. A clinician may assess sun spots, some post-inflammatory marks, or other uneven areas before choosing this approach.

The light energy can fragment pigment, and the treated area may look temporarily red, darker, or slightly swollen. The skin then gradually sheds or clears the treated pigment.
