What should you know about the Philips 1.5 T MRI scanner?

The scanner creates a strong magnetic field that aligns hydrogen particles in the body. Radio waves then produce signals that a computer turns into images. The scanner can show soft tissues, organs, blood vessels and some tumour-related changes. Philips is the manufacturer; the exact scan quality and available sequences depend on the installed system, the body area and the radiology protocol. MRI does not use X-rays, but the magnetic field creates important safety restrictions.

Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, implanted pumps, metal fragments, aneurysm clips, cochlear implants, pregnancy, kidney problems and previous reactions to contrast. Remove jewellery, cards, phones and other metal objects as instructed. During the scan, you lie on a table that moves into a short tunnel; loud sounds are expected, and hearing protection is provided. Follow instructions about eating, drinking and medicines, especially if contrast or sedation is planned.

Tell staff immediately if you feel burning, pain, breathing difficulty, sudden dizziness, severe anxiety or unusual discomfort during the scan. After contrast, promptly report a spreading rash, facial swelling or trouble breathing. If sedation was used, follow the discharge instructions and arrange help as advised. Urgent care is needed for severe breathing difficulty, collapse or rapidly worsening swelling.
