What can a PET scan show in the spine?

FDG Radiotracer may collect in areas where cells are using more glucose. The PET component can highlight active bone or soft-tissue processes; CT can show bone shape, alignment and other anatomical detail. Together, the images may help assess suspected spread, compare with earlier imaging, or investigate a focal finding.

Activity in the spine has several possible explanations, including cancer, infection, inflammation, healing or strain. A scan finding is not the same as a diagnosis, and the location must be matched with pain, examination and other tests.

Follow the centre's instructions about fasting, medicines and activity. Tell the team about diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent injury, surgery or treatment. Bring details of earlier scans if requested. If the report raises a question, your doctor may consider MRI, laboratory tests or another targeted assessment.

Seek urgent medical assessment for new leg weakness, loss of balance, numbness that is worsening, or difficulty controlling urine or stool. Severe back pain with fever also needs prompt attention. These symptoms can have causes other than cancer, but pressure on the spinal cord or nerve structures requires rapid evaluation.

Ask whether the finding is in bone or nearby tissue, whether it matches your symptoms, if MRI is appropriate, and which changes should lead you to contact the team immediately.
