How PET scan results are read

The reader reviews the whole study, checks image quality, and examines organs, lymph nodes, bones, and other relevant regions. PET activity is matched to CT anatomy so an area of uptake can be located more precisely. The reader may compare earlier images to identify change, stability, or a response after treatment.

A finding can be described as suspicious, indeterminate, benign-appearing, or related to normal body function. Those descriptions express the level of concern for the imaging question, not a final diagnosis. Exercise, blood sugar, infection, inflammation, recent procedures, and treatment timing can all influence the appearance.

Wait for the ordering clinician to explain the report in context. Ask for the key finding, its location, and the reason for any recommended biopsy, repeat imaging, or specialist appointment. Tell the team about new symptoms and recent treatment, even if they were not listed on the referral.

If the report uses unfamiliar abbreviations or refers to a comparison study, request a plain-language explanation. Keep the result with your other medical records. The next step may be reassurance and monitoring, more diagnostic work, or a treatment discussion; the choice depends on the complete evidence.

Contact staff during the visit for a sudden reaction, severe dizziness, or worsening discomfort. Get urgent medical help for collapse, major breathing difficulty, new weakness, or confusion. Do not delay emergency assessment while waiting for someone to call about the scan.

Ask whether the scan answered the original question, which findings are certain, and which need confirmation. Ask how your blood tests, examination, biopsy, or previous images affect the reading, and what symptoms should prompt an earlier review.
