What can a PET scan show in the pelvic area?

The pelvic portion of a PET-CT may include the bladder, pelvic bones, lymph nodes, bowel, and reproductive or urinary organs, depending on the scan range. PET shows how tissues handle the tracer, while CT provides a structural map. This combination can help clinicians assess a known cancer, look for spread, compare treatment-related changes, or investigate a finding that needs more context. Urine in the bladder can appear bright because the tracer leaves the body through the kidneys; bowel activity can also vary. These normal or non-cancer causes are why the image is read with your symptoms, examination, laboratory results, and other scans. A report may recommend follow-up imaging or another test rather than giving a final answer from PET alone.

Follow the appointment instructions about food, fluids, exercise, and medicines. Tell the team about diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent surgery, infection, or difficulty lying flat.
