Does a PET Scan Use IV Contrast?

FDG Radiotracer helps show glucose use by tissues on the PET component. IV contrast is a separate substance that can make blood vessels and selected structures easier to distinguish on the CT component. Some PET-CT examinations use contrast, while others use a non-contrast CT, depending on the clinical question and local protocol.

Tell the imaging team about a previous contrast reaction, kidney disease, thyroid problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding, diabetes, and medicines. A past reaction does not automatically rule out imaging, but it changes the safety discussion and preparation.

Check whether you may eat, drink, or take regular medicines before arriving. Follow the centre's instructions rather than assuming that every PET appointment has the same preparation. If IV contrast is planned, the team may review your medical history and ask about recent blood tests.

During injection, you may notice brief coolness or warmth. Remain still when asked and report itching, hives, tightness in the throat, wheezing, dizziness, or feeling unwell immediately. The CT and PET portions are then combined for interpretation in a PET-CT Scan.

Tell staff at once about any symptoms during injection or scanning. After leaving, seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse, or severe dizziness. Contact the imaging service about a delayed rash or other new symptom so they can advise you.
