What should you know about pet scan for tuberculosis?

A PET scan uses a tracer to highlight tissues with increased metabolic activity. Infection, inflammation and some cancers can all appear active, so the image needs clinical context. For suspected lung disease, a chest X-ray, CT imaging, sputum testing or tuberculosis screening may be more directly useful depending on the question.

Tuberculosis can affect the lungs or other organs. The scan may help map disease, look for activity outside the chest or assess a difficult-to-interpret finding, but an active-looking area is not the same as a confirmed diagnosis.

Tell the imaging team about pregnancy, diabetes, medicines and difficulty lying still. Follow their instructions about eating, drinking and strenuous activity before the appointment. Bring previous images and a list of symptoms, travel or exposure history, and treatment already taken.

If you have a persistent cough, fever, night sweats or swollen glands, arrange medical review. Mention immune-system conditions such as HIV infection because they can affect the assessment and follow-up plan.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, confusion, coughing blood or marked weakness. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent cough, ongoing fever, drenching night sweats or unexplained weight loss, especially after close contact with someone who has tuberculosis.

Ask what the scan is intended to answer, which test will confirm or exclude tuberculosis, whether you need precautions around close contacts, and how the result will change treatment.
