PET scan explained in English

PET means positron emission tomography. A small amount of FDG Radiotracer is given, usually through a vein. Cells that use glucose can take up the tracer, and the PET camera records its signal. CT images are taken in the same examination to show where that activity sits. The combined images help a clinician understand a finding, but an active area can have more than one explanation, including infection, inflammation, healing, or normal organ function.

Doctors may request this test to investigate a suspicious finding, assess the extent of known cancer, plan a biopsy or treatment, or compare scans over time. It may be relevant in conditions such as Lymphoma or Cancer of Unknown Primary. The report is a medical interpretation, not a diagnosis that can be read from one bright spot alone.

Before the visit, follow the centre's directions about food, water, medicines, and exercise. Tell staff about diabetes, pregnancy, breastfeeding, recent illness, and any difficulty lying still. After the tracer is given, you usually rest quietly before lying on the scanner bed. Staying still helps the pictures. Ask the team when the report will be ready and who will explain how it relates to your symptoms, examination, blood tests, and any tissue results.

Call the centre before the appointment if you are unwell or cannot complete its preparation instructions. Seek urgent medical help for collapse, severe breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, or rapidly worsening symptoms after the injection.
