What should you know about a PET prostate scan?

The tracer travels through the body and collects in areas with particular biological activity. The CT part maps those areas to body structures, so the team can review the prostate, nearby tissues, lymph nodes and other regions together. A scan finding is interpreted alongside symptoms, examination findings, blood tests and earlier imaging; it does not by itself prove that a spot is cancer.

The exact tracer matters. FDG is one radiotracer used in PET imaging, while prostate-focused scans may use a different tracer selected for the clinical question. Ask which tracer is planned and what the report will compare.

The imaging centre will explain whether you need to avoid food for a period before the appointment, how to manage medicines, and when to arrive. Tell the team about diabetes, allergies, kidney problems, recent illness and any possibility of pregnancy. Wear comfortable clothing and follow instructions about drinking water and using the toilet.

During the appointment, the tracer is given, followed by a quiet waiting period and then imaging while you lie still. Afterward, ask when the report will be discussed and whether further imaging, a biopsy or a treatment consultation is needed.

Contact the imaging or oncology team promptly if you develop a rash, swelling, breathing difficulty, marked dizziness or other sudden symptoms after the tracer. Seek urgent care for severe breathing trouble or fainting. Separately, new inability to pass urine, worsening weakness in the legs or loss of bladder or bowel control needs urgent medical assessment.
