What should you know about PET-CT scan equipment?

A PET-CT unit usually has a flat bed that slides through a wide, ring-shaped scanner. The CT section uses X-rays to make cross-sectional pictures of body structures. The PET section detects signals from the tracer after it has collected in areas of activity. Computer software aligns the two image sets, helping the specialist relate a tracer pattern to an organ, tissue, or bone.

The opening is generally wider than a traditional enclosed MRI bore, but the table and scanner can still feel unfamiliar. The technologist can communicate with you during the examination and may give breathing instructions. Tell the team if you have pain, anxiety in enclosed spaces, or difficulty keeping still so practical support can be planned.

Wear clothing that allows comfortable positioning and follow instructions about fasting, water, exercise, and medicines. Remove jewellery or other metal items when asked. Keep your phone and belongings outside the scanning area. During the appointment, relax your muscles and avoid talking or moving unless the technologist tells you to. If you use mobility aids or need help transferring to the table, mention this when booking.

Report pain, dizziness, nausea, or distress during the scan so the team can pause and assess you. Afterward, seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms, particularly if contrast was used. Contact the centre about persistent injection-site swelling or a rash that continues to spread.

Ask whether your appointment includes CT contrast, how long the visit may take, what support is available if you cannot lie flat, and when a specialist will explain the images.
