What should you know about PET-CT scan details?

After check-in, the team reviews your medicines and health history. A tracer is given, followed by a quiet waiting period so it can distribute through the body. You then lie on a narrow bed that moves through the scanner. The equipment records PET activity and CT anatomy in the same appointment, allowing the radiology team to compare where activity appears with the underlying structures.

The scan itself is not a treatment. You need to remain still, and you may be asked to breathe or hold your breath briefly for a CT image. The interpreting specialist reviews the images alongside your symptoms, examination, and other tests. A bright area is not a diagnosis by itself, because infection, inflammation, healing, and normal body activity can also affect tracer uptake.

Follow the centre’s instructions about food, fluids, exercise, and medicines. Tell staff if you have diabetes, may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or could have difficulty lying still. Wear comfortable clothes and leave metal jewellery at home where possible. Drink fluids afterwards if the team recommends this, and follow their advice about contact with others. Bring earlier scans or reports if requested so the specialist can compare findings over time.

Contact the imaging service if you have persistent vomiting, increasing pain or swelling at an injection site, or a new rash after the appointment. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, fainting, or severe dizziness. If you feel unwell before the scan, tell the centre rather than arriving without guidance, especially when fasting or medicine changes are involved.

Ask why the scan is recommended, what preparation applies to you, whether contrast is planned, when the report will be available, and which result would change the next step in your care.
