What should you know about pet allergy rash?

Pet allergy involves an immune response to proteins carried on an animal’s skin flakes, saliva or urine. Contact can cause itchy redness, raised patches or hives, especially where the animal licks or where fur and dander touch the skin. Symptoms may appear soon after contact, but irritation can linger on clothing, furniture and bedding.

A rash can occur with pet allergy, but a rash alone does not establish its cause. Other skin conditions, bites, products and infections may look similar. Pet allergy may also cause sneezing, a runny nose or itchy eyes when airborne allergens are inhaled.

Wash exposed skin after contact, change clothes if dander is noticeable, and keep pets away from the bedroom if possible. Wash bedding regularly, clean surfaces and avoid rubbing irritated areas. A cool compress and a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser may soothe the skin.

A clinician can discuss allergy medication or arrange allergy testing when the pattern is unclear or symptoms keep returning. Do not apply a new cream to widespread or broken skin without advice. If a specific animal triggers symptoms, limiting direct contact is more useful than relying on appearance alone.

Seek emergency help for swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, wheezing, trouble breathing, faintness or a rapidly spreading reaction. Arrange medical review for a painful, oozing or infected-looking rash, symptoms affecting sleep, or a rash that continues despite avoiding the suspected trigger.
