What should you know about pertuzumab immunotherapy?

Pertuzumab is a monoclonal antibody. It attaches to a HER2 protein on some cancer cells and helps interrupt signals that can encourage those cells to grow. It is often paired with another HER2-directed medicine and chemotherapy; the combination depends on the cancer, its extent, previous treatment, and your general health.

Treatment is usually delivered by infusion in a clinic. The team checks your medicines, symptoms, and heart health because HER2-directed treatment can affect heart function in some people. Infusion reactions, diarrhoea, tiredness, nausea, and skin changes are possible, but experiences differ.

Bring a complete list of medicines, supplements, allergies, and previous cancer treatments. Tell the team about heart disease, breathlessness, pregnancy, or plans to become pregnant. During treatment, report new diarrhoea, reduced appetite, fever, rash, swelling, or worsening shortness of breath rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Your oncology team may arrange heart checks and blood tests at intervals. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or change contraception without advice. Contact your cancer team promptly for fever, chills, facial or throat swelling, wheezing, sudden dizziness, severe or persistent diarrhoea, or signs of dehydration. Seek urgent medical help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, or sudden swelling. These symptoms can have different causes, so explain when they began and whether they followed an infusion.
