What should you know about a personal ECG machine?

An ECG detects electrical signals through sensors placed on the skin. A personal device may record a brief rhythm strip, often using fingers or a small set of contact points. It can help capture an episode of a fast, slow or irregular heartbeat and provide a recording to discuss with a clinician. It may not show problems that occur only with exertion, changes in blood flow, or conditions outside the time of recording. A device message is not the same as a diagnosis.

Follow the device instructions and record the time, position, symptoms and activity alongside each tracing. Keep the skin clean and still, because movement, sweat and poor contact can create artefacts. Save recordings in the format your clinician can open, and take the device to an appointment if requested. Do not change heart medicines based only on an automated result. A clinician may recommend a formal electrocardiogram or longer monitoring when episodes are brief or infrequent.

Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, new weakness on one side, confusion or palpitations with collapse. Seek prompt medical advice for a new persistent irregular rhythm, repeated racing heartbeat or symptoms that are becoming more frequent. A normal home tracing does not make emergency symptoms safe to ignore.
