Persistent headache and sore throat: what to know

A viral illness can cause throat soreness, head pain, feverishness, blocked nose, or body aches. Dry air, dehydration, mouth breathing, reflux, allergies, and muscle tension can also contribute. The throat symptom may come from the nose or upper airway rather than the brain. A headache is a common presentation of many minor illnesses, while a brain tumour or brain metastases can have neurological symptoms that need a different assessment; having a headache does not by itself show that either condition is present.

Pay attention to whether the headache is new, steadily worsening, worse after waking, triggered by coughing or straining, or accompanied by vomiting, vision change, weakness, confusion, or a seizure. Note whether the sore throat is one-sided, makes swallowing difficult, or comes with neck swelling.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, choose soft foods if swallowing hurts, and avoid smoke or other throat irritants. Keep a brief record of temperature, headache location, severity, medicines taken, and any new symptoms. Arrange a medical appointment if the symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with sleep, eating, work, or usual activity. A clinician may examine your throat, ears, nose, neck, and nervous system before deciding whether tests are useful.

Seek urgent help for a sudden severe headache, new weakness or numbness, trouble speaking, fainting, confusion, seizure, repeated vomiting, a stiff neck with fever, or new loss of vision. Get prompt assessment if you cannot swallow fluids, are drooling, have breathing difficulty, or develop rapidly increasing swelling in the throat or neck.

Ask what pattern of infection or irritation fits your symptoms, whether your medicines could be contributing, and which changes should trigger urgent review. If neurological symptoms are present, ask what examination or imaging would clarify the cause.
