Benzoyl peroxide is a formulated acne treatment that reduces acne-related bacteria and inflammation in the follicle. Hydrogen peroxide poured onto skin is a different product and can cause dryness, stinging, irritation, and delayed healing. Pimple-like bumps may also come from folliculitis, razor bumps, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis, where acne products may aggravate the problem rather than solve it.

Check the label for benzoyl peroxide and follow the product directions. Apply a thin amount to clean, dry skin, start gradually if your skin is sensitive, and moisturise afterward. Keep it away from eyes, lips, broken skin, and fabrics because it can irritate skin and bleach textiles. Do not combine several irritating acne products at once. If bumps are widespread, painful, scarring, or not settling, a clinician can confirm the diagnosis and build a routine.

Stop the product and seek advice for facial swelling, blistering, severe burning, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly worsening rash.
