What should you know about permanent stye on eyelid?

A typical stye is a tender, localised swelling near an eyelash or within the eyelid. As inflammation settles, a firm, less painful lump can remain when an oil gland stays blocked. This is sometimes called a chalazion rather than an active stye. Ongoing redness, discharge, recurrent swelling, crusting, or a lump that gradually changes needs an examination because several eyelid conditions can look alike.

Avoid assuming that a lasting lump is harmless solely because it began like a stye. The clinician may inspect the eyelid surface and check vision, eye movement, and the surrounding skin.

Apply a comfortably warm, clean compress to the closed eyelid for several minutes, then gently clean the lid margin. Repeat this regularly if it feels soothing. Do not squeeze, pierce, or rub the lump, and avoid eye makeup or contact lenses while the eye is irritated. Keep towels and face cloths personal, especially if there is discharge. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an eye treatment is appropriate; do not use leftover eye drops.

Arrange a GP or eye-care assessment when the lump persists, repeatedly returns, becomes more painful, or does not respond to simple care. Seek urgent help for reduced or blurred vision, marked light sensitivity, severe eye pain, rapidly spreading redness or swelling, fever, pain when moving the eye, or an eye that becomes difficult to open. Eye discharge or a very red eye can provide useful context during assessment.

Ask whether the lump is still inflamed or is more consistent with a blocked gland, whether any medicine is suitable, and how long to monitor it. Mention recurrence, skin changes, discharge, vision symptoms, contact-lens use, and any previous eyelid treatment.
