What should you know about permanent burn marks?

Burn healing can leave skin darker, lighter, thicker, thinner, shiny, tight, or uneven. A raised scar may feel firm or itchy, while a contracted scar can restrict movement near a joint or across the neck. The final appearance depends on burn depth, location, healing, skin tone, and whether the area became infected.

A mark that is still changing may be immature scar tissue rather than a finished result. Scars can soften and settle gradually, but a mature scar may still remain visible. A dermatologist or burn specialist can distinguish colour change from deeper scar tissue and check whether tightness affects function.

Protect healed skin from sunlight, moisturise when the surface is closed, and avoid picking or rubbing the area. Do not apply acids, bleaching products, or home devices to recently healed skin without clinical advice.

Treatment is selected according to the scar’s depth and behaviour. Fractional Laser Treatment may be considered for selected texture or colour concerns. These procedures require an examination and realistic discussion of healing.
