DEXA uses low-dose X-rays to estimate how much mineral is present in bone. A peripheral device measures a smaller site, often the forearm, heel, or finger, rather than the hip and spine measured by a standard bone density scan. The result can support a conversation about fracture risk, but the meaning depends on your age, medical history, medicines, and the site tested. A clinician may recommend a central scan when a more complete assessment is needed.

Ask the imaging service whether to avoid calcium supplements before the appointment and tell staff if you may be pregnant, have recently had a contrast examination, or have metal near the measurement site. Wear clothing that allows the area to be reached easily. The scan is brief and you remain still while the device records the measurement. Discuss the report with the clinician who requested it rather than treating one number as a diagnosis.
