Perioral Dermatitis and Zero Therapy

Perioral dermatitis often appears as clusters of tiny bumps with redness, scaling, burning or sensitivity around the mouth. Product layers can make it difficult to identify an irritant and may keep the area inflamed. Zero therapy is a short, deliberate reset, not a promise that every rash will clear without treatment.

Stop makeup, fragranced skincare, scrubs, exfoliants, thick moisturisers and other non-essential products on the affected area. Cleanse gently with lukewarm water or a mild cleanser and avoid rubbing. If dryness is severe, ask a clinician which simple product is suitable rather than restarting a full routine. A dermatologist may add topical or oral treatment when the eruption is persistent, widespread or uncomfortable.

Book an assessment if the rash is not settling, involves the eyelids, or repeatedly returns. Seek prompt help for eye pain or visual symptoms, fever, rapidly increasing swelling, spreading warmth or drainage. These signs need assessment because they are not typical reasons to continue a self-directed product reset.

Ask which products should be paused, whether a prescribed steroid needs a supervised taper, what can be used for cracking or discomfort, and when to return if the bumps remain.
