Perioral dermatitis and vaping: what to know

Perioral dermatitis can cause small bumps, redness, dryness, burning, or sensitivity around the mouth and sometimes the nose or eyes. A vape device can repeatedly touch the lips and nearby skin; warm vapour, flavouring residue, saliva, wiping, and hand contact may add local irritation.

That pattern does not prove vaping caused the condition. A new skincare product, facial steroid, toothpaste, mask, or another exposure may be involved, and acne or contact dermatitis can look similar. An examination is more useful than trying to identify one cause from appearance alone.

Avoid wiping or licking the skin, clean the mouthpiece as directed, and keep residue from sitting on facial skin. Use gentle cleansing and pause fragranced lip products, scrubs, and nonessential creams while the rash is active. Record when symptoms appear in relation to vaping, products, heat, and rubbing.

Reducing or stopping vaping may remove a possible irritant and also supports broader health goals; nicotine withdrawal can be difficult, so ask a healthcare professional for support if needed. Arrange a review if bumps or burning continue despite simpler skincare, recur after settling, or spread toward the eyes. Seek prompt care for eye pain, vision changes, fever, pus, marked swelling, or rapidly worsening warmth and redness.
