Can Perioral Dermatitis Spread?

The rash may begin around the mouth and appear around the nose, chin, or eyes. It often consists of small bumps with dry, scaly, burning, or sensitive skin, while the skin immediately next to the lips may look relatively clear. Extension across nearby skin can happen as inflammation continues or as the skin is exposed to an irritant. Perioral dermatitis is not considered contagious, so ordinary contact does not transmit it. A rapidly expanding, hot, tender rash is a different concern and should not be assumed to be this condition.

Use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, pat dry, and reduce rubbing from towels, masks, or hands. Stop newly added cosmetics and avoid picking the bumps. Review every facial product, including sunscreen, balm, toothpaste, and over-the-counter creams, with a clinician if the pattern continues. Avoid starting a topical corticosteroid without advice. Treatment may involve a prescribed topical antibiotic or oral medicine depending on the extent and appearance of the rash.

Get prompt assessment for fast expansion, warmth, severe pain, crusting, pus, fever, facial swelling, or eye symptoms. Arrange a dermatology appointment if the rash reaches new facial areas, returns after treatment, or has not improved with a simplified routine. These changes can signal another diagnosis or a need to adjust treatment.
