Period started after menopause: what to know
Updated

Short answer
A period that starts after menopause is not expected and needs medical assessment to identify the source of bleeding.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- After menopause
- Any new vaginal bleeding should be assessed.
- Track
- Timing, amount, colour, pain, and triggers such as sex.
What bleeding may mean
Menopause is reached after twelve months without a menstrual period. Bleeding afterwards may come from thinning or irritation of the vaginal or womb lining, a benign growth such as a polyp, or a condition affecting the womb lining. Pelvic organ prolapse can also cause tissue irritation and spotting. Bleeding does not by itself show which cause is present, and many causes are treatable; an examination is needed to separate them.
What to do next
Arrange an appointment with a GP or gynaecology clinician promptly. Record when the bleeding began, whether it was spotting or a flow, its colour, any pain, and whether it followed sex. Mention vaginal dryness, medicines, hormone treatment, or previous abnormal tests. The clinician may examine the vagina and cervix and may arrange an ultrasound or a sample from the womb lining.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or continuous, you feel faint or unusually weak, you have severe pelvic pain, fever, or shortness of breath. Do not wait for a routine appointment if these symptoms occur.
Questions for your doctor
What could be causing the bleeding? Do I need an examination, ultrasound, or womb-lining sample? Could dryness or a medicine be contributing? What symptoms should prompt urgent help?

Questions people ask
Is light spotting after menopause still worth checking?
Yes. Even a small amount of spotting can come from several causes, so arrange an assessment rather than assuming it is a new period.
Can menopause symptoms continue when bleeding happens?
Symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, low sex drive, and vaginal dryness may occur around menopause, but they do not explain away new bleeding.
