What bleeding may mean

Menopause is reached after twelve months without a menstrual period. Bleeding afterwards may come from thinning or irritation of the vaginal or womb lining, a benign growth such as a polyp, or a condition affecting the womb lining. Pelvic organ prolapse can also cause tissue irritation and spotting. Bleeding does not by itself show which cause is present, and many causes are treatable; an examination is needed to separate them.

What to do next

Arrange an appointment with a GP or gynaecology clinician promptly. Record when the bleeding began, whether it was spotting or a flow, its colour, any pain, and whether it followed sex. Mention vaginal dryness, medicines, hormone treatment, or previous abnormal tests. The clinician may examine the vagina and cervix and may arrange an ultrasound or a sample from the womb lining.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical help if bleeding is heavy or continuous, you feel faint or unusually weak, you have severe pelvic pain, fever, or shortness of breath. Do not wait for a routine appointment if these symptoms occur.
