Some people notice a faster heartbeat or reduced tolerance for heat before they recognise other changes. Symptoms overlap with other conditions, so they do not establish the cause by themselves.

A clinician usually reviews symptoms, medicines and medical history, then uses thyroid blood tests and sometimes further examination to understand thyroid activity. The cause may influence the treatment plan.

Arrange medical review when symptoms persist, cluster together or affect sleep, work, exercise or daily comfort. Take prescribed treatment exactly as directed and attend follow-up testing. Tell the clinician about heart symptoms, pregnancy, supplements and medicines, including products that may contain thyroid hormone or iodine.
