Pelvic MRI with contrast: possible side effects

A contrast agent is given through a vein to make selected pelvic tissues easier to distinguish on the images. Some people notice a cool feeling, warmth, a metallic taste, mild nausea, headache, or temporary discomfort where the needle entered. These effects often settle soon after the injection. Tell the imaging team before the scan if you have had a reaction to contrast, kidney disease, asthma, or a possibility of pregnancy, because this can affect the preparation and choice of imaging approach.

Follow the centre’s instructions about eating, drinking, medicines, and arrival time. During the scan, report itching, flushing, dizziness, breathing changes, or feeling unwell immediately rather than waiting for the images to finish. Afterward, follow the team’s advice about fluids and observation. Keep the injection site clean and mention increasing pain, swelling, or redness if it develops later.

Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, fainting, widespread hives, severe weakness, or confusion after contrast. Contact the imaging centre or a clinician promptly for a spreading rash, repeated vomiting, or worsening symptoms. A mild, short-lived warm sensation is different from a progressive reaction, but any symptom that concerns you deserves clear advice.
