Pelvic bone MRI: what to expect

Short answer

A pelvic bone MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the pelvis without ionising radiation, helping clinicians assess bone and nearby soft tissues.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the scan examines

MRI can show pelvic bones, joints, marrow, muscles, tendons, and other nearby structures in detail. It does not use X-rays. During the scan, you lie still while images are collected inside a wide, tunnel-shaped machine. The equipment makes loud knocking sounds, so headphones or ear protection are usually provided. Some examinations use contrast through a vein; the imaging team will explain this and check relevant medical history.

Preparing for the appointment

Tell the imaging team if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, have metal fragments, an implanted device, kidney problems, allergies, or difficulty staying in enclosed spaces. Remove jewellery and follow instructions about clothing, food, or drink. Arrive ready to describe your symptoms and previous scans. During imaging, use the call button if you feel distressed; clear communication helps the team pause and support you.

After the MRI

Most people return to normal activities after a routine scan. Contact the service if you develop a delayed reaction after contrast, such as a rash, swelling, or breathing difficulty; breathing difficulty or swelling needs emergency care. Seek medical advice for new severe pain, weakness, or loss of bladder or bowel control, whether or not it follows the scan.

Questions to ask

Ask why the MRI is recommended, whether contrast is planned, how long you should expect to remain still, and when results will be discussed. If you have an implant, ask whether its exact model has been cleared for MRI before booking.

Questions people ask

Is a pelvic bone MRI painful?

The scan itself should not hurt, although lying still or staying in one position may feel uncomfortable.

Can I have an MRI with a metal implant?

Possibly, depending on the device and its exact specifications; give the imaging team complete implant details before the appointment.
