Short answer

Spots and pimples can arise from blocked pores, inflamed follicles, hormonal acne, rosacea, or irritation, so their pattern and symptoms guide the next step.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Useful clues
Location, hair removal, burning, itch, tenderness, and flare timing
Avoid
Picking, harsh scrubs, and repeatedly changing treatments

Different patterns, different causes

Acne commonly causes blackheads, whiteheads, red bumps, and deeper tender lesions in areas with oil glands. Folliculitis starts around hair follicles and may follow shaving, sweating, friction, or occlusive products. Razor bumps are linked to hairs growing back into the skin. Rosacea can cause central facial redness with acne-like bumps, while perioral dermatitis often clusters around the mouth and may sting or burn. Hormonal acne can follow a recurring lower-face or jawline pattern, but appearance alone cannot confirm the cause.

Helpful next steps

Cleanse gently, avoid scrubbing and picking, and choose products labelled non-comedogenic when possible. Pause new fragranced products if burning or a rash appeared after using them. Use a clean razor, shave with the direction of hair growth, and reduce tight friction when bumps follow hair removal. Keep a simple record of flare timing, location, menstrual or medication changes, and triggers such as heat. A clinician can match treatment to the pattern; LED light therapy may be discussed as an adjunct for some acne concerns, not as a substitute for diagnosis.

When to seek care

Arrange medical review for painful deep spots, repeated scarring, sudden widespread bumps, persistent facial burning, or a rash around the mouth or eyes. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, pus with fever, severe swelling, or eye pain or vision changes. Review is also useful when spots continue despite gentle care or are affecting sleep, confidence, or daily activities.

Questions for your doctor

Does the pattern fit acne, folliculitis, razor bumps, rosacea, or perioral dermatitis? Which products should I stop or continue? Could shaving, hormones, medicines, or a skin condition be contributing? What improvement and irritation signs should I watch for?

Questions people ask

Are all spots acne?

No. Folliculitis, razor bumps, rosacea, perioral dermatitis, and irritation can resemble acne but need different care.

When should spots be checked?

Seek review for deep pain, scarring, rapid spread, persistent burning, eye symptoms, or repeated flares that do not settle.
