Moveable pea-sized lump in the neck: what to know

Some lymph nodes can move slightly beneath the skin, especially when they enlarge during a nearby throat, ear, dental, or skin infection. Clinicians also consider whether a lump is soft or firm, tender or painless, stable or growing, and attached to deeper tissue. A neck lump can be a presentation of lymphoma, head and neck cancer, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary, yet movement by itself cannot identify any of these conditions.

The examination may include the neck, thyroid, mouth, throat, and ears. If the cause remains unclear, a clinician may recommend imaging or a needle sample rather than relying on touch alone.

Check it no more than needed and write down when it appeared, whether it changes, and any recent infection or dental issue. Make an appointment if it persists, grows, becomes firm, stops moving, or appears with voice, swallowing, or general health changes.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe illness. Prompt assessment is appropriate for continued growth, a hard or fixed feel, persistent hoarseness, swallowing trouble, unexplained weight loss, or drenching night sweats.

Ask whether the lump feels like a lymph node, what examination findings matter most, whether it needs imaging or sampling, and when it should be checked again if it remains moveable but does not resolve.
