What should you know about a pea-sized lump in the neck?

Neck lumps can arise from lymph nodes, the thyroid, salivary glands, skin, or soft tissue. A lymph node may enlarge during or after an infection in the throat, ear, teeth, or skin. Cysts and other non-cancerous growths are also possible. Lymphoma, head and neck cancer, thyroid cancer, and cancer of unknown primary can present with a neck lump, but most people with a neck lump cannot be diagnosed from its size or feel alone. Tell the clinician whether the lump is new, growing, painful, soft, firm, mobile, or attached to deeper tissue. Mention cough, sore throat, dental symptoms, hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight change.

Arrange an appointment if the lump lasts beyond a short illness, grows, feels firm or fixed, or has no obvious cause.
