PDO Threads for the Breast: What to Know

A clinician may position threads beneath selected areas of breast skin when the aim is a modest change in contour or skin support. The threads can create a supporting framework while the body gradually breaks down the material. Results depend on skin elasticity, breast weight, tissue laxity, thread design, and the placement plan. Threads cannot remove excess skin or substantially reposition breast tissue, so expectations need to be realistic.

The consultation should distinguish a breast skin concern from a change in the breast itself. New lumps, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, or a persistent focal change need medical assessment rather than cosmetic treatment. A thread procedure also has possible downsides, including bruising, swelling, tenderness, infection, asymmetry, visible or palpable threads, and thread movement.

Avoid pressing, massaging, or exercising the treated area until you are told it is appropriate, and attend the planned review so healing and symmetry can be checked.

Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is worsening rather than easing, redness is spreading, the skin feels hot, drainage develops, or you develop fever. Seek urgent medical help for sudden breathing difficulty, severe allergic symptoms, rapidly increasing swelling, or chest pain. A new breast lump, nipple change, bloody discharge, or skin dimpling should be assessed by a breast clinician, whether or not threads were placed.

Ask: Is the change I want realistic with threads? Where would you place them and why? How will you protect the nipple and nearby structures? What signs would suggest infection or thread displacement? What is the plan if the result is uneven or a thread becomes visible?
