PDO thread healing: what to expect

Short answer

Healing after PDO threads commonly involves temporary tenderness, swelling, bruising, tightness, and unevenness as the skin settles; careful aftercare and review help identify problems early.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Expected early changes
Tenderness, bruising, swelling, tightness, or unevenness
Helpful habit
Follow placement-specific aftercare and attend review
Avoid
Rubbing, pressure, and self-removal

Why healing can look uneven

Insertion creates small areas of tissue irritation, and the threads initially hold skin in a new position. As inflammation reduces, the face may feel tight or look asymmetrical before it settles. Polydioxanone is gradually broken down while the surrounding tissue remodels, so the final appearance should not be judged during the first phase of swelling.

Recovery varies with the treated area, thread pattern, skin sensitivity, general health, and whether other procedures were performed. Mild discomfort can be expected, but symptoms should trend toward improvement. Your clinician can explain the specific pattern expected for your placement.

Supporting recovery

Keep the small entry sites clean and follow the exact dressing and cleansing instructions provided. Avoid rubbing, pressing, facial massage, vigorous exercise, and wide facial movements for the period advised by your clinician. Use only recommended pain relief, and never stop a prescribed medicine without medical guidance.

Protect treated skin from strong sun exposure and postpone facials, waxing, or other treatments near the threads until cleared. Keep your follow-up appointment even if the result seems fine; examination helps confirm that the threads and skin are settling as intended.

Signs that need review

Call the treating clinic if pain, warmth, redness, swelling, or drainage is increasing, if fever develops, or if a thread becomes visible or seems to move. Get urgent care for severe swelling, breathing difficulty, facial weakness, or sudden vision changes. Do not squeeze an entry site or attempt to remove a thread yourself.

Questions about your recovery

Ask how your specific symptoms should change over time, which activities are restricted, what cleansing products are suitable, when massage or other facial treatments can resume, and which number to use for evening or weekend concerns.

Questions people ask

Is tightness after PDO threads normal?

A pulling or tight sensation can occur early, but worsening pain or swelling should be assessed by the treating clinic.

Can I exercise during healing?

Wait for the activity window given by your clinician because vigorous movement can increase swelling or pressure on healing tissue.
