Short answer

Mono, also called glandular fever, is an infection that can cause sore throat, fever, swollen glands and pronounced tiredness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common features
Sore throat, fever, swollen glands and fatigue
Recovery
Tiredness may outlast throat symptoms
Activity
Avoid strenuous activity until advised

Recognising the pattern

Glandular fever often produces a sore throat, swollen glands in the neck, fever and a generally unwell feeling. Fatigue can be prominent and may continue after the throat symptoms settle. Night sweats can occur, but these symptoms are not specific to mono; a clinician may consider other infections and causes.

Assessment may include an examination and blood tests, depending on timing and symptoms. A negative early test may not settle the question, so explain when the illness began and whether symptoms are changing.

Caring for yourself

Rest, drink fluids and use only medicines suitable for you as advised by a clinician or pharmacist. Avoid strenuous activity and contact sports while recovering, because illness can affect the spleen even when the abdomen feels normal. Return to usual activity gradually when you feel well and have received appropriate advice.

Antibiotics do not treat the viral cause of glandular fever, although a separate bacterial infection may need different care. Do not share drinks, utensils or toothbrushes while unwell, and wash hands regularly.

When to seek urgent care

Get urgent help for severe trouble breathing or swallowing, inability to drink, fainting, severe or worsening pain high in the abdomen, unusual drowsiness, or sudden deterioration. Arrange review if fever persists, fatigue is disabling, or symptoms are not following the expected course.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether testing is needed, which activities to avoid, when work or exercise can resume, and how to manage throat pain and fluids. Check which symptoms suggest a complication and whether another diagnosis should be considered if recovery is slow.

Questions people ask

Does mono always cause a sore throat?

No. Symptoms vary, and some people have mainly fatigue, fever or swollen glands.

Why should contact sports be avoided?

Glandular fever can affect the spleen, so strenuous or contact activity may be unsafe during recovery.
