Paroxysmal cough

A burst can make it hard to inhale, speak, sleep, or catch your breath. The cough may be dry or bring up mucus, and triggers can include cold air, exercise, smoke, lying down, or nasal drainage. A common cold or acute bronchitis can irritate the airways, while asthma may cause bouts with wheeze or chest tightness.

The symptom alone cannot identify its cause. A clinician will ask when it began, whether it follows an infection, what the mucus looks like, and whether you have fever, breathlessness, reflux, allergies, or an inhaler. Listening to the chest and checking oxygen levels may guide further testing.

Sip fluids, avoid smoke and strong fragrances, and use a humidified environment if dry air triggers you. Rest your voice and note the setting, time, and symptoms around each bout. Use an inhaler or other medicine only as prescribed; cough medicines are not appropriate for every person or cause.

If reflux seems linked, discuss meal timing and night symptoms with a clinician rather than starting long-term treatment on your own. A persistent or recurrent cough deserves review, especially when it limits sleep, eating, work, or exercise.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, confusion, or an inability to speak in full sentences. Arrange medical review for a cough that is worsening, accompanied by fever or wheeze, or returning in repeated episodes.

Ask whether the pattern suggests asthma, reflux, nasal drainage, infection, or another airway problem. Discuss whether you need a chest examination, breathing tests, imaging, or a written plan for a future coughing bout.
