What should you know about panthenol and perioral dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis often appears as small, closely grouped bumps around the mouth, nose, or eyes, with dryness, stinging, or sensitivity. It can resemble pimples, but the distribution and feel of the rash help distinguish it from acne. Thick cosmetics, fragranced products, and repeated product changes may add irritation.

Panthenol is a moisturising ingredient used in barrier-support products. A simple, fragrance-free formula may feel comfortable for some people, while a richer or complex product may worsen congestion or burning. The ingredient alone cannot confirm or exclude perioral dermatitis.

Use a gentle cleanser, avoid scrubbing, and pause non-essential products around the mouth while the skin is unsettled. Do not start or continue topical corticosteroids on the area without medical guidance; stopping suddenly after regular use may also need a clinician's plan.

If the rash persists, a dermatologist may consider topical antibiotic therapy or, when appropriate, oral antibiotics for acne-related inflammatory patterns. Introduce any moisturiser on a small area first and stop if the rash becomes more uncomfortable.

Seek assessment for a spreading rash, marked swelling, eye involvement, pus, crusting, or significant pain. Arrange an appointment when bumps continue, recur after steroid use, or interfere with eating, speaking, or sleep.
