Short answer

Intermittent claudication is leg pain or heaviness brought on by walking when narrowed arteries cannot deliver enough blood to working muscles.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical trigger
Walking or other leg exercise
Typical response
Discomfort may ease after resting

What it means

Peripheral arterial disease narrows arteries supplying the legs. During activity, muscles need more oxygen, so reduced flow can cause aching, cramping, tightness, or heaviness in the calf, thigh, or buttock. Symptoms often settle after rest but may return with similar exertion. Leg pain when walking can also come from joints, nerves, muscles, or veins; it does not by itself establish the cause.

Assessment may include checking pulses, skin temperature, walking symptoms, and blood pressure, with circulation tests when appropriate. Type 2 diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, and cholesterol problems can increase vascular risk. Varicose veins usually cause a different pattern of discomfort, but overlapping symptoms deserve examination.

What to do next

Book a medical review if walking pain repeatedly limits you or is getting worse. A clinician may recommend a structured walking plan, treatment of vascular risk factors, and medicines suited to your health. Stop smoking if you smoke, protect your feet from injury, and check them regularly, particularly if you have diabetes. Do not push through severe pain or ignore a wound that is slow to heal.

When to seek care

Seek urgent care for sudden severe leg pain, a cold or pale foot, new numbness or weakness, loss of movement, or a wound with spreading redness or darkening skin. Pain at rest, especially at night, or a sudden major change in walking symptoms needs prompt assessment because it may signal severely reduced circulation.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which circulation test is needed, whether the pattern fits peripheral arterial disease, how to exercise safely, how foot care should change with diabetes, and which symptoms mean you should seek urgent help.

Questions people ask

Does walking pain always mean PAD?

No. Joint, nerve, muscle, and vein problems can also cause it, so an examination is useful.

Can intermittent claudication improve?

Symptoms can improve with supervised activity, risk-factor care, and treatment chosen after assessment.
