When ovulation pain is really bad

Typical ovulation discomfort is often brief and manageable, but pain intensity alone cannot establish its cause. Severe pain may reflect an ovarian, pelvic, bowel, urinary, pregnancy-related, or abdominal problem. Endometriosis may cause recurring pain that affects daily life, and Ovarian Cysts may cause pressure or sudden pain. Pain that is one-sided, rapidly worsening, or unlike previous cycles deserves particular attention. Do not use a familiar calendar date to rule out a new condition.

Stop strenuous activity and note when the pain began, where it is strongest, and whether you have bleeding, fever, vomiting, dizziness, discharge, or urinary symptoms. Have someone stay with you if you feel faint or weak. Do not drive yourself if pain is severe or you may faint. A pregnancy test may be relevant if pregnancy is possible, but do not delay urgent care while waiting for a result. Bring a list of medicines and relevant cycle or postpartum details to assessment.

Seek emergency care for sudden severe pain, fainting, collapse, heavy bleeding, repeated vomiting, fever with marked illness, a swollen or rigid abdomen, or severe pain when pregnancy is possible. Contact a clinician promptly when pain stops normal activities, does not settle, returns repeatedly, or needs frequent pain medicine. Assessment may include an examination, pregnancy testing, urine checks, or imaging depending on your symptoms.
