How long can ovulation pain last?

Mid-cycle pain can be brief or linger for a limited time as the ovary and surrounding tissues respond to egg release. The expected pattern is usually familiar and gradually improves, rather than becoming stronger each day. Pain that continues for several days may come from a different pelvic, urinary, bowel, muscle, or nerve problem. Endometriosis and Ovarian Cysts are examples of gynaecological conditions that can cause repeated or longer-lasting pelvic pain. The duration alone cannot identify the cause, so note associated symptoms and whether the pain is on one side or spreads.

Write down when the pain began, its location, its intensity, the cycle day, and any bleeding, discharge, fever, nausea, bowel, bladder, or pregnancy symptoms. Rest from activities that aggravate it, try gentle movement or local heat, and drink fluids if you can. Seek advice about pain medicine if pregnancy is possible, you take regular medicines, or you have stomach, kidney, or liver disease. Do not use repeated self-treatment to postpone review when the pain is not improving.

Go to urgent care for sudden severe pain, fainting, heavy vaginal bleeding, fever, repeated vomiting, a rigid or very tender abdomen, or pain with a positive pregnancy test. Arrange a clinician visit when pain lasts beyond your usual cycle pattern, returns repeatedly, limits movement or sleep, or occurs with unusual discharge, painful urination, or pain during sex.
