What should you know about overweight and snoring?

Short answer
Overweight can increase snoring by narrowing the upper airway, although snoring has several possible causes.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible mechanism
- Tissues around the airway may reduce space during sleep.
- Useful clue
- Breathing pauses or daytime sleepiness need assessment.
What it means
Snoring happens when relaxed tissues in the nose or throat vibrate as air moves during sleep. Extra tissue around the neck can reduce airway space. Nasal blockage from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis, alcohol, smoking, sleeping on your back and some medicines can also contribute.
Snoring itself does not establish a diagnosis. Loud, frequent snoring with breathing pauses, gasping, restless sleep, morning headaches or daytime sleepiness can indicate obstructive sleep apnoea, which deserves clinical assessment.
What to do next
Try side-sleeping, treating nasal congestion with advice from a pharmacist or clinician, avoiding alcohol near bedtime, and keeping a regular sleep schedule. If weight is a concern, a structured weight management programme can provide tailored food, movement and behaviour support.
Ask someone who sleeps nearby whether they notice pauses or choking sounds. Keep notes about snoring, sleep quality and daytime alertness before an appointment.
When to seek care
Book an assessment if snoring is persistent, disrupts sleep, or comes with witnessed pauses, choking, morning headaches or unplanned daytime sleep. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting or confusion.
Questions for your doctor
Could my snoring be linked to obstructive sleep apnoea? Do I need a sleep assessment? Is nasal blockage contributing? Which weight or sleep changes should I try first?

Questions people ask
Does every person who snores have sleep apnoea?
No. Snoring has many causes, but pauses, gasping and daytime sleepiness make assessment more relevant.
Can changing sleep position help?
Side-sleeping may reduce snoring for some people, especially when back-sleeping worsens it.
