What should you know about over fatigue?

Short answer
Fatigue is more than ordinary sleepiness when low energy persists, limits daily activities, or does not improve after adequate rest.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What fatigue can reflect
Fatigue may follow poor sleep, emotional strain, infection, dehydration, or sustained physical effort. It can also accompany anaemia, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease, COVID-19, burnout, alcohol use disorder, or chronic fatigue syndrome. These conditions have different patterns, so fatigue alone cannot identify one cause.
Notice when it began, whether it is present on waking, and what makes it better or worse. Record sleep quality, mood, appetite, breathlessness, pain, fever, bleeding, thirst, and changes in weight. This gives a clinician useful context.
Supporting your energy
Keep a steady sleep and wake routine, eat regular nourishing meals, drink enough for your needs, and use gentle activity with planned rests. Break demanding jobs into smaller tasks and reduce alcohol, especially near bedtime. Avoid repeatedly pushing through exhaustion, which can prolong recovery.
Review new medicines and supplements with a pharmacist rather than stopping prescribed treatment yourself. If work, caregiving, or low mood is overwhelming, discuss practical support and a gradual plan with a clinician.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for fatigue with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, one-sided weakness, or thoughts of self-harm. Arrange a medical appointment if tiredness is persistent, worsening, affecting work or driving, or accompanied by fever, unexplained weight change, bleeding, swollen glands, or marked thirst.
A clinician may assess sleep, nutrition, mood, medicines, and physical symptoms, then decide whether examination or blood and urine tests could clarify the cause.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which causes fit your pattern, whether your medicines or sleep need review, and what changes should prompt urgent help. Bring your symptom timeline and any home readings you already track.

Questions people ask
Is fatigue the same as sleepiness?
No. Sleepiness is a tendency to fall asleep, while fatigue is reduced energy or stamina; they can occur together.
When should persistent tiredness be checked?
Book an assessment when it persists, worsens, or interferes with normal activities, especially with other physical or emotional symptoms.
