Otitis externa over-the-counter medication: what to know

Otitis externa affects the skin lining the outer ear canal. Swelling can trap debris and make hearing seem reduced. The correct treatment depends on what the canal and eardrum look like; an infection, eczema, irritation, or a foreign object may need different care.

A pharmacist can advise about suitable pain relief after checking your medicines and health conditions. Do not assume that an ear product for wax, itching, or another problem will treat infection. Avoid drops if a hole in the eardrum is possible unless a clinician confirms they are appropriate.

Keep water out of the ear and pause swimming. Do not scratch the canal or use cotton buds, fingers, oils, or leftover antibiotics. Arrange an assessment when pain, tenderness, discharge, or swelling persists.
