Short answer

Over-the-counter acid reflux medicines may ease occasional symptoms, but repeated or severe reflux needs medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding reflux

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move back toward the food pipe. It may cause burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, upper abdominal discomfort, cough, chest tightness, or difficulty sleeping. A hiatus hernia, excess weight, certain foods, alcohol, smoking, and medicines can contribute, but symptoms vary between people.

Antacids can neutralise acid for short-term relief, while other non-prescription medicines reduce acid production. Check the label and ask a pharmacist about interactions, pregnancy, kidney disease, swallowing problems, or other conditions. Relief does not prove that every chest symptom is reflux.

Using self-care safely

Follow the product instructions and do not combine similar medicines unless a pharmacist advises it. Try smaller meals, avoid lying down soon after eating, and identify personal triggers. Raising the head of the bed may help night symptoms; extra pillows alone can increase abdominal pressure for some people.

Arrange a medical review if symptoms keep returning, need frequent non-prescription medicine, disturb sleep, or do not improve as directed. A clinician can check for acid reflux and consider other causes, including chronic cough or heart-related symptoms.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for chest pressure or tightness with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, or back. Get prompt review for vomiting blood, black stools, progressive difficulty swallowing, food sticking, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or severe abdominal pain.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which product suits your symptoms and medicines, how long to try it, whether ongoing reflux needs testing, and which warning signs should prompt urgent care.

Questions people ask

Can I use over-the-counter medicine for every episode?

Use it only as directed; frequent or ongoing symptoms should be reviewed rather than repeatedly self-treated.

Can reflux cause a cough?

It can contribute to cough, but persistent cough has other possible causes and may need assessment.
