Short answer

Optrex conjunctivitis refers to inflammation of the eye surface that may cause redness, watering, irritation, or discharge.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common features
Redness, watering, irritation, crusting, or discharge
Avoid
Rubbing eyes, sharing towels, and wearing contact lenses during symptoms

What it can mean

Conjunctivitis affects the thin surface covering the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. Viral, bacterial, allergic, and irritant causes can look similar. Itching in both eyes often fits an allergic pattern, while sticky discharge may occur with infection, but symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the cause.

The condition can spread through contaminated hands, towels, cosmetics, or shared surfaces when infection is responsible. Light sensitivity, marked pain, or vision change is less typical of simple conjunctivitis and deserves assessment.

What to do at home

Wash hands before and after touching the eyes, avoid rubbing them, and use a clean warm compress to loosen crusting. Do not share towels, pillows, eye cosmetics, or contact lenses. Pause contact lens use until symptoms have settled and a clinician confirms it is safe to resume.

Lubricating drops may ease irritation. Antibiotic treatment is useful only for selected bacterial infections and does not treat viral or allergic causes, so use it when a clinician or pharmacist recommends it. Clean discharge gently with fresh cotton or a clean cloth for each eye.

When to seek care

Seek urgent eye assessment for significant pain, light sensitivity, reduced or blurred vision that does not clear with blinking, injury, chemical exposure, a very swollen eyelid, or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer. Prompt review is also sensible when symptoms are worsening, persistent, or affecting a newborn.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which cause is most consistent with your symptoms, whether you should stop work or school temporarily, whether treatment is needed, and when contact lenses or cosmetics can be used again. Mention pain, light sensitivity, vision change, and any recent exposure to someone with eye infection.

Questions people ask

Does every case of conjunctivitis need antibiotics?

No. Antibiotics do not treat viral or allergic conjunctivitis and are recommended only when a bacterial cause is suspected.

Can conjunctivitis spread to the other eye?

Yes. Touching discharge and then the other eye can transfer infection, so handwashing and separate clean cloths help reduce spread.
