What should you know about an open upright MRI scanner?

The scanner uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves, so it does not use ionising radiation. An upright position can help the team assess anatomy under load or accommodate someone who cannot comfortably lie flat. The opening and image quality vary by machine, and some examinations still require a particular position or a coil around the body part. Movement can blur images, so the technologist may support the area and ask you to remain still.

Tell the imaging team about metal fragments, implants, clips, pumps, hearing devices, pregnancy, kidney problems and previous reactions to contrast. Remove metal objects and follow instructions about clothing, food or medicines. Ask whether contrast is planned and whether you need someone to accompany you. During the scan, you can usually communicate with the technologist; report discomfort, anxiety or difficulty holding a position rather than moving suddenly.

MRI itself does not usually require recovery time. If contrast was given, report rash, swelling, wheezing or severe dizziness immediately. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or fainting. Contact the imaging service if an implant concern emerges after the appointment or if the scanned area develops unusual pain or swelling.

Ask whether an upright examination answers the clinical question, whether the scan will be seated or standing, how long you must hold still, whether contrast is needed, and when the report will be sent to the referring clinician.
