What should you know about open blocked nose?

A common cold can cause temporary congestion with sneezing, throat irritation, or a runny nose. Allergic rhinitis may bring repeated sneezing, itchy eyes, and clear discharge, while sinusitis can add facial pressure or thicker mucus. House dust mite allergy may cause symptoms indoors. Night-time mouth breathing and loud snoring can also accompany obstructive sleep apnoea, especially when sleep is unrefreshing.

Drink enough fluid, avoid smoke and known triggers, and try saline spray or a saline rinse made with safe water. Follow product directions for any allergy medication. A decongestant spray may cause rebound blockage if used too long, so ask a pharmacist about suitable duration and interactions. Arrange review when blockage keeps returning, affects sleep, or stays mainly on one side.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, swelling around an eye, marked facial swelling, a severe headache with fever, confusion, or a stiff neck. Seek prompt assessment for a nosebleed that will not stop, injury-related obstruction, or symptoms that are steadily worsening. Children with breathing difficulty, poor drinking, or unusual sleepiness also need prompt attention.

Ask whether the pattern fits a cold, allergy, or sinus problem; whether examination is needed; which treatments suit your medicines and conditions; and how long to try them before review. Mention snoring, reduced smell, facial pain, and any one-sided symptoms.
