What to know about a one-step hCG urine test

A one-step hCG urine test looks for human chorionic gonadotropin in urine to screen for pregnancy. The device usually displays a control indication to show that the test worked and a separate result indication. Use the instructions supplied with that specific device because sample collection and reading windows differ between products.

When the pregnancy indication appears together with a valid control indication, hCG has been detected. Arrange healthcare follow-up to confirm the result and discuss pregnancy care, particularly if you have pain, bleeding, or a condition that affects your health.

A valid negative result indicates that detectable hCG was not found in the sample at that time. It cannot always exclude a very early pregnancy. A late period, testing too soon, excess fluid before testing, or a faulty device can affect what you see. An absent control indication makes the result invalid, not negative.

Before testing, inspect the packaging, check the expiry date, and prepare the sample exactly as described. Read the window only within the stated time period; changes afterwards should not be treated as a new result.

Go for urgent assessment if a positive test is followed by severe abdominal pain, pain mainly on one side, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, or heavy vaginal bleeding. Do not wait for a repeat home result when these symptoms are present.
