What should you know about an old ECG machine with suction cups?

The cups and other electrodes detect tiny electrical signals from the skin. The machine displays or prints these signals as a tracing for a trained professional to review. The test records the heart's activity at that moment; it does not directly show every heart problem.

Good contact is needed. Hair, sweat, movement, or a loose cup can create interference that makes the tracing harder to interpret. An ECG Machine may look different from newer equipment while performing the same basic recording task.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and limbs. Tell the technician about skin sensitivity, chest hair, or discomfort from adhesive or suction. Lie still, breathe normally, and avoid talking while the tracing is being recorded.

The electrodes should be clean and the cables intact. Ask staff to explain any unfamiliar equipment, and mention if a cup loses contact or pinches your skin. A standard Electrocardiogram is usually brief, but allow time for correct placement and review.

Call emergency services for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, collapse, or sudden weakness, especially if symptoms are new or intense. Do not wait for an ECG appointment to end or rely on an old tracing when urgent symptoms are present.

Ask what the ECG is intended to assess, whether the tracing was clear, when you will receive the interpretation, and whether your symptoms require another test or immediate treatment.
