What should you know about old age freckles?

People use old-age freckles for flat tan, brown, or darker marks that become more noticeable on sun-exposed skin with time. These marks are usually different from childhood freckles, which may darken in sunlight and fade when exposure falls. Appearance alone cannot confirm what a spot is. A clinician may inspect its colour, border, surface, location, and evolution before discussing removal.

Use broad-spectrum sun protection, seek shade, and cover exposed skin to reduce further darkening and protect surrounding skin. Do not scratch, burn, or self-treat an uncertain spot with strong lightening products. Results and the risk of temporary colour change depend on the diagnosis and skin type.

Arrange a prompt skin examination if a mark is new, enlarging, very different from nearby spots, uneven in colour or outline, bleeding, crusting, persistently itchy, or not healing.
