Short answer

Foot oedema is swelling caused by extra fluid in the tissues, and its cause may range from pressure or injury to infection or a broader health problem.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What foot oedema can mean

One foot may swell after a sprain, bite, tight footwear, or prolonged standing. Swelling in both feet can follow dependent fluid pooling, while hot, red, tender skin can point towards cellulitis. Sudden swelling with itchy raised areas may occur with hives, and deeper swelling of the skin can occur with angioedema. Skin tightness, sock marks, reduced flexibility, or difficulty fitting a shoe are useful details to record.

What you can do now

Remove tight shoes and rings around the ankle, rest with the foot raised, and gently move the ankle if movement is comfortable. Protect irritated skin and avoid scratching. Do not massage a painful, hot, or rapidly enlarging area, and do not start leftover antibiotics or water tablets. Arrange a clinical review if the swelling persists, returns, or has no clear trigger; take a list of medicines and note whether one or both feet are affected.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe swelling, a cold or blue foot, severe pain, numbness, inability to walk, or swelling after a significant injury. Get prompt assessment when the foot is hot and red, redness is spreading, fever is present, or drainage appears. Swelling with lip, tongue, or throat swelling or trouble breathing is an emergency.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pattern suggests injury, infection, an allergic reaction, or fluid retention; whether you need an examination or tests; and which movement, footwear, or treatment is suitable for you.

Questions people ask

Avoid compression until a clinician has checked sudden, painful, hot, or one-sided swelling and confirmed it is appropriate.
